we were sent there to do what was hard. we were sent there to take on the tough issues. we were sent there to solve the big challenges, and that's why we're there. and at this moment, at this moment we are being called upon to fulfill our duty to the citizens of this nation and to future generations. so i'll be honest with you, i don't know how passing health care will play politically, but i do know that it's the right thing to do. it's right for our families. it's right for our businesses. it's right for the united states of america. and if you share that belief, i want you to stand with me and fight with me and i ask you to help get us over the finish line

these next two weeks. the need is great. the opportunity is here. let's seize reform. it's within our grasp. thank you very much, everybody. god bless you. well, an enthusiastic crowd out there at arcadia university in glenside, pennsylvania, today for a big speech by the president on health care reform, making the argument right now directly to the people that health care is the right thing to do even if republicans are painting it as politically unpopular. nbc's ron allen is just outside where the president is right now there in glenside, pennsylvania. this is the first time in a long time, ron, we have seen the president talking solely about health care. his whole ing today to this crowd was to sell health care. >> reporter: indeed, contessa. the last event was sikts months ago.
12:02 pm
i think what he was trying to do is break this down into human, very personal terms that people can understand. he also spoke with a lot of passion, a lot of energy. this felt like a campaign stop a year ago when candidate obama was out and so successful as a communicator. you know the white house has been criticized for not seizing the narrative in this health care debate. he tried to make it personal by targeting the insurance companies as well, saying they've been raising premiums, dropping people from coverage, denying coverage for pre-existing conditions. that resonates with people in places like this who have experienced that. the problem is that president obama is trying to move this through a reluctant congress that involves key members of his own party. so while there's populism out here, the question remains whether he can still get enough votes even within his own party and congress to get this health care bill over the finish line. it's a big complicated thing. the white house has been trying to really break it down into manageable, understandable components so that people will
12:03 pm
agree with some aspect of the program. the polls show there is modest support for health care reform. but the polls also show that there is support for various elements of it. what the president was doing was a very populous message. he was really taking on washington. it was very interesting in the beginning, he talked about the pundits, the polls, the politicians talking about the next election in november. he tried to dismiss all that and say essentially this is about the people, it's not about the politicians. it's us against washington. we'll see how i plays. >> okay. ron, the big question at this point, the democrats who have been reluctant to support health care have done so on the basis of two really big reasons. one, cost, and two, abortion. has there been any revision of the plan to appeal more to those doubtful, skeptical democrats? >> reporter: there have been some revisions. there's talk of compromises. that's an ongoing process. whether they have put specific language in the bills or in the
12:04 pm
process that will satisfy the critics of this, i think that remains to be seen. the process is very complicated. and it relies on some trust from the lower house, the house of representatives trusting the senate to do some things later. again, the president is trying to get past all the complications of this because i think most people simply don't understand the process and they don't understand how this will affect them. so again, the process continues. the president is trying to make it simple. whether he has the votes on the hill or not i think le mains to be seen. two-week deadline, a hard push. he's had different groups of reluctant congressmen from his own party to the white house. that process will possibly continue as we go through the next couple weeks. there's another event like this in st. louis where the president will try to again take his message direct tloi the people, talking over the politicians. ultimately he's hoping people in places like this will press sure their representatives in congress to vote for health care reform finally. >> we'll be watching for that
12:05 pm
and see whether the st. louis crowd can watch this pennsylvania crowd in terms of how voc they were. almost as though the president was leading a revival meeting with so much feedback from the audience. ron allen, thank you for the fine reporting out there. developing right now. we're learning a date has been set for casey anthony's murder trial. expect it to begin on may 9, 2011. the 23-year-old is charged with first degree mr der in the death of her daughter caylee. casey anthony claims she's innocent. new this hour, the u.s. supreme court will consider whether protests at funerals are protected free speech. those protests are especially controversial when demonstrators target funerals of service members killed in afghanistan. a kansas man makes a habit at showing up at military funerals to protest is what he says is allowing gays to serve in the military. interpol is issuing alerts for 16 more suspects believed to

they'll have to wait to another time, it would appear, if he's going to be arrest sgld given the fact they don't know who it is, is it clear what kind of valuable information he may or may not have? >> no, it's not. it does seem to be pretty low level. the fact that there isn't a clear idea here in the u.s. of who it is would certainly lead to the idea that it's not a person of great high value. >> pete, thank you. midday for the markets, world markets are actually high tore day because investors are optimistic about the u.s. economy recovering. let's take a look at the markets right now. moving the markets, you can see the dow jones is off by 14.5. the s&p is flat and the nasdaq up three points. a new round of mergers and acquisitions and good news from mcdonald's. job seekers are facing another hurdle. a new survey shows 60% of employers are running credit, checks on applicants in an effort to find out about a potential employee's honesty and sense of responsibility. that makes it tough if you've
